St. Augustine of Hippo- on being too prideful, especially when it comes to intelligence.

Good Morning from sultry Houston. Yes it is humid but at least we are not in a drought and it is not going to be 100 degrees today!

I like the Catechism Class. com site we have subscribed to. I got it mostly for my 16yo, but I am reading it too, and I think dh will, as well. It is all laid out daily and we are not doing it all. But it links nicely to daily scripture, meditations, saint of the day, current articles about faith in today's world, etc.

(Challenge here about how to share this info with dc without turning it into a dry religion class. So far so good. Also, their half price sale ends at the end of August if there is anyone reading this who is interested)

Being a convert who came to the church in mid-life I am not very well versed on saints. I do have a few I have come to know and relate to. Catechismclass.com has a saint of the day link as part of the daily program. I am enjoying seeing the various saints.

Today's saint is St. Augustine of Hippo. Below is a quote about how being intelligent and searching for knowledge tripped him up.


"Though he was one of the most intelligent men who ever lived and though he had been brought up a Christian, his sins of impurity and his pride darkened his mind so much, that he could not see or understand the Divine Truth anymore. Through the prayers of his holy mother and the marvelous preaching of St. Ambrose, Augustine finally became convinced that Christianity was the one true religion. Yet he did not become a Christian then, because he thought he could never live a pure life. One day, however, he heard about two men who had suddenly been converted on reading the life of St. Antony, and he felt terrible ashamed of himself.

"What are we doing?" he cried to his friend Alipius. "Unlearned people are taking Heaven by force, while we, with all our knowledge, are so cowardly that we keep rolling around in the mud of our sins!" "

St. Augustine is also the patron saint of brewers and I must admit I do enjoy a cold beer now and then!
