Grant and Lee

I am now listening to the book April 1865 by Jay Winik.

It is about the last month of the Civil War, in great detail.

The part I am on now is the letters that Grant and Lee send each other as the devestating war is coming to a close- Lee is retreating deeper in the south and west and Grant is pursuing him.

They wrote eloquently to each other, like gentlemen. They had to deal with the length of time it took to get the correspondence through, if the letter got through at all.

It was a different time- no cell phones, and even with all the bloodshed, still a sense of chivalry and honor.

Now, knowing he is going to have to face surrender, Lee has to decide whether to order his men to engage in gurellia warfare, and ancient form of war where the weak can subversivly engage the strong. Another point in which Lee's decision affect the history of our country. Amazing.

Nice dinner converation, too.
