Adult Roles of Our Children-- Circa 1997

And here are the goals I wrote based on the Elijah article and Stephen Covey's concept of looking with the end in mind. What roles will our children have in adulthood?

It is amazing to me I wrote this the second year I homeschooled and how timeless they are. Nothing really has changed. And I thought I had changed so much all these years. I think I have just defined more about what I really always believed. :)

When looking at the goals for our kids, first look at what we want them to be as adults. The potential roles they will have as adults are:

ADULT ROLES MY CHILDREN WILL HAVE

Child of God (their relationship with and purpose for God)
Family Member role: son, brother, grandson, etc.
Spouse role: as husband
Parent role: as father
Church member role
Friend role
Profession role: as employer, employee, manager, etc.
Community Member role

To achieve these adult roles with personal success, they need to focus on the relationships, skills and academic information necessary to perform them. ( And all of this can be achieved with a love of learning, zest for life and sense of adventure.) Notes on the contents within the three areas follows:

THE TOOLS MY CHILDREN NEED IN LIFE

Relationships:
With God
With self (healthy self concept and physical fitness)
With others
With created things (money, time, work, animals, environment, etc)
With life (love of learning)
With the Church (understanding, living, questioning, active and alive)

Life Skills:
Discipline
Social skills
Business skills
Money management
Household management
Computer skills
Time management
Thinking/logic skills
Individual talents: art, music etc






Academics:

Reading
Writing
Speaking/Communicating
Math
Science
History
Foreign Language
Social Studies
Art
Music
Faith studies: Catholic Church, theology, history, bible, sacraments

EXAMPLE: To achieve the adult role of ‘father’, they will need to learn about relationships with God (to ask for LOTS of help), with others to get assistance, with their own parents (for modeling); life skills of money managment (to provide a stable home) time management (to have enough time to spend with their children); academics to teach their children about the world, provide a living for them, impart a love of the world,
understand their faith and Church teachings to pass on and so on.
