Just One of the Many Layers of Learning

There is no way to get down all the learning we do.
But I try to get part of it down stacatto in my sprial journal.
And, I like this blog because it inspired me to get some of the detail down, of vignettes of our lives.. :)

Here is one I wanted to add. I think because it describes so well how a simple moment is full of learning, natrually, and this one in particular just illustrates to me so well that it is just another of literally thousands of layers.

B and myself made Souls Cakes courtesy of Leonie.

What we learned/experienced:

-Togetherness. Alone in the house he was stuck with me, so agreed to cook with ol' Mom. :)

-The recipe is from Austrailia so was in grams. It also had conversions next to it in ounces. But were there ounces to be measured or weighed out?

-Why do they have a different system? Which side of the road do they drive on? (B remembered when Luke visited and we picked him up at the airport. He tried to get in the driver's side! lol) so they must drive on the left side of the road...

-What time is it in Austrailia? Are they earlier or later? What about China? Where is China in comparison with Austrailia?

-These look like bisuits we make. And kind of like shortbread we made. How are the different?

-Have you ever tried to weigh out a pound of flour? (the recipe calls for this)
We got a digital postage scale and B would add, subtract, be .5 oz over, .2 oz under.. great decimal skills!

-Mixer safety. First time B has used my big mixmaster.. VERY careful about keeping fingers out of the paddle when it is plugged in.. it is powerful.

-The recipe didn't tell you to add the milk in the instructions. So we didn't. The mixture was dry and crumbly. What to do? How much milk to add? Discussed recipes and how they interact. When to know how much moisture is enough. What good cooks can do, how they can gauge, etc.

-Placing them on the baking sheet, we began to space, but then remembere there was no levening at all, so they would not expand.

-Recipe said to prick holes in top. Why?

-Soul Cakes.. why the name? All Souls Day- what does it mean?

And none of this was contrived or me trying to force learning. :)

So, that was about 30 minutes of our lives. Enjoyed it. :)

Hi Leonie--

Well.. as you know not every bit of life has so much discussion... that little bit was jam packed. :)

Thanks again for the recipe! Glad you all made them too... fun to think we are making the same things a world apart!

We are all on a journey, and this blog's reason for existence is to be a place to put mine. From humble suburbian begnnings just north of Dallas to a Catholic unschooler with a passion for faith, lifelong learning, my family and dogs, here I stand before you. Welcome to my world!
Authenticity. That would have to be my theme at present. To enjoy my family, be true to ourselves and our faith and be authentic and enthusiastic about life!

"What children need is not new and better curricula but access to more and more of the real world; plenty of time and space to think over their experiences, and to use fantasy and play to make meaning out of them; and advice, road maps, guidebooks, to make it easier for them to get where they want to go (not where we think they ought to go), and to find out what they want to find out."
