Revelation

I had a revelation yesterday.

I imagined myself at age 13. I thought about what it would be like to be homeschooled with a mentor/parent who was interested in life and felt her mission was to help me explore life.

I remembered the little neighborhood I lived in and my best friends. (Sharon and Ginger). I imagined they homeschooled, too. Wow, it would have been so fun to see them follow their interests, (Ginger's was politics, Sharon's was horses) and spend hours of time with them. Oh the field trips we could have taken!

I thought about all the small interests I had then- dogs, nature, writing. (But had little time to pursue. How I squeezed those into my after-school and weekend hours. ) Then I imagined my life if I homeschooled and my parent/mentor who would pick up on those and offer to drive me all over to explore them more. Wow! The world would just have opened up and gone Technicolor!

I imagined having books everywhere, reading, exploring all subjects and my parent giving me structure I needed to finish the things I needed to, and encouraging me to take my education into my own hands.

Then I realized that I would have learned so much. And YES I would have been ready for college... just as ready, no, maybe even MORE ready than I was after 12 years of public schools and mostly straight As.

Sometimes when homeschooling and parenting seems like uncharted territory, when I imagine myself as a child it all seems clearer. I would have loved homeschooling.

My boys are so lucky. Big Grin. :)
